Charcoal kiln ruins
Charcoal Kiln Remains
Forestry was the main industry in Mitake / Shosenkyo up until the late 1950s. One major source of income for residents was charcoal-making.
Charcoal kilns were temporary and simple structures of stacked rocks topped with sheet iron, built on slopes near their ingredients for convenience. Once nearby smaller trees like pin and sawtooth oak or Japanese beech and maple were used up, another kiln would be built elsewhere, so this area is dotted with the remains of such kilns.
